Photograph of the city I used to go to school at, a bit of a geographical oddity; it is built upon a giant sand bar of the Mississippi River nestled between the bluffs of Wisconsin (background) and Minnesota (foreground).
It's always nice flying around this time of year when Fall colors start to come out. Later afternoon/evening flights really bring out the topography as the river valleys cast shadows.
On the top of the hill in the foreground is a scenic overlook for the city. My co-pilot and I got a kick out of looking down at it.

can you imagine that entire valley used to be filled with water. when the ice age was winding down the glaciers melted and a ton of water ran off down the mississippi carving out huge valleys that today's rivers could never accomplish. lovely photo and thanks for the explanation.
